Make Plastic History

Success story 3 - As part of our efforts to eradicate the use of non-recyclable single-use plastic, we have removed plastic packaging from our supplies of sugarAll non-recyclable sugar packaging eliminated! We realised that a simple change to the way we source our sugar supplies could result in a significant reduction in the need for plastic packaging.

Stainless steel sugar dispenser

By reviewing the available options and seeking simple but innovative solutions, we have eliminated the use of plastic packing on supplies of sugar.

Challenge

We were previously purchasing around 75kg of Fairtrade granulated white and brown sugar per year. The sugar came in packets of 1kg in boxes of six wrapped in plastic. Each of these packets was then decanted into stainless steel dispensers which were filled daily and cleaned weekly.

The challenge was to find an alternative that reduced the amount of unnecessary packaging, particularly the plastic wrapping.

Solution

The solution was to source organic raw cane sugar supplied in 25kg paper bags. The new packaging is paper which can be recycled and has resulted in a complete reduction of the plastic waste associated with this.

By buying larger quantities of sugar, this has also resulted in a cost saving of around 40p per kg, representing a saving of around £30 per year. While this might only be a nominal saving, it does mean it is cheaper for us to use the sustainable option which means everyone is happy!
